Dr. Gabriel A. Reich | Gabriel A. Reich is a Professor of secondary history education at VCU’s School of Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Reich began his educational career as a high school history teacher in New York City. He earned a Ph.D. from New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in 2007. Dr. Reich’s area of special interest is historical consciousness, a theory that describes how people use their historical knowledge when making sense of who they are and what is going on in contemporary society.

Dr. Reich is particularly interested in the connections between how members of the public remember the U.S. Civil War and how they make sense of contemporary developments in U.S. politics, society, and culture. He has published in a variety of scholarly publications, such as The Journal of Curriculum Studies, Theory and Research in Social Education, and Historical Encounters.
