Praying Stations of St. Paul’s
Wednesday, February 28 & March 20 @ 1:30 PM following the Lenten Lunch and Speaker Series. Modeled after the Stations of the Cross, the Stations of St. Paul’s are a liturgical and art installation created by artist Janelle Washington drawing from in-depth historical research. Each station depicts a specific moment in St. Paul’s history with a focus on race relations.
A Conversation on Racial Healing with RVA Leaders
February 10, 12 -2 PM @ River Road Baptist Church. This conversation will feature The Rev. Ben Campbell, author of Richmond’s Unhealed History and founder of Richmond Hill, The Rev. Dr. Lance Watson, Senior Pastor of the Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, and Kristen Green, author of The Devil’s Half Acre and Something Must Be Done about Prince Edward County. Commemorating The Rev. Absalom Jones and Bishop Barbara Harris
February 12, 7:00 PM @ St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. The Diocese invites you to a Celebration of the Holy Eucharist, commemorating the pioneering ministries of the Rev. Absalom Jones, the first black Episcopal priest, and the Rt. Rev. Barbara Harris, the first female bishop in The Episcopal Church. At the commemoration service, Bishop Gayle Harris will preach and Bishop E. Mark Stevenson will preside.
Dawoud Bey: Elegy

St. Paul’s Racial Justice and Healing (RJH) Team invites you to a special tour of the Dawoud Bey: Elegy exhibition led by Ms. Valerie Cassel Oliver, VMFA’s Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. This free tour is limited to 25 participants and registration is required. In addition, free VIP tickets are available for those who wish to see the exhibit but cannot join us on
Faith and Action: Telling of Black Stories with Janelle Washington
Join us on February 18 for our February Faith and Action forum focused on Black History Month. Janelle Washington is an award-winning self-taught paper-cut artist who has worked on a variety of pieces, including the Stations of St. Paul’s which will be in the Sanctuary beginning February 14th. Janelle illustrated the book Choosing Brave, which is “a Caldecott-honor winning picture book biography of the mother of Emmett Till, and how she channeled grief over her son’s death into a call to action for the civil rights movement.” Join us as Janelle shares about the process of writing and illustrating this book as well as her overall work towards telling Black stories.
There will be an opportunity to purchase Choosing Brave for $10, pick it up on February 18, and have it signed by Janelle.
Citywide Book Read
March 4, 7-8:30 PM, First Baptist Church. This year’s city-wide book read will feature The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, written as a letter to his nephew on the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. And, Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates, written as a letter to his son.
